“Stress shuts down the prefrontal cortex, shunting blood flow away from the higher brain to the primitive, or reactive, brain.”
This means that when you're triggered by something and you feel that rush of jealousy, anxiety, or panic, you lose access to your intelligence! The point of staying cool and collected is not to "pretend everything is fine when it's not", the point is to pause long enough to get your brain back. Once you're no longer a reactive cave-woman, you can make decisions about how to proceed (and usually, by that time, it's not that big of a deal anymore).
